My Australian friend is always talking about the foods she misses from home, Sausage Rolls, Pasties and especially Meat Pies. I tried this recipe out to surprise her and used 5" mini pie tins with pie crust on the bottom and puff pastry on the top. I added a puff pastry kangaroo to each pie and brushed them with milk. I rotated the pies around in the oven a couple times and put foil on top, and they came out great. She loved them and said they were very close to the 4 and 20 pies, but with less gravy. That could be me cooking off too much liquid. Super long story short this is a great recipe and a hit with everyone at the office not just the Aussie in accounting.

Elke... From my DH...."this was way different from ' a stew in a pie crust' - loved that it was not like meat chunks and gravey but much more tenderized. Somehow it was so much lighter and easier to eat than our traditional Canadian meat pie. The beef came off like a nice roast beef in a crust, I liked the spices, Anxiously awaiting for my wife to make it again!" I made the filling a few weeks ago and froze it (it took way longer than your estimated 10 min prep though... I made enough for two really large pies... one with added potatoe and kernel corn from the garden.. I adore meat pie and this was so tasty... I will make this again and again!! Can't wait to get to Australia and eat the real thing!!!.. Thank you for posting such a delicious and unique-to-me-dish! We served it with fresh buns, pickled dills, olives, carrots and beets, (too lazy for real vegs)..the beets were fabulous with the pie for some reason! Rating...taste is a fab 5 stars.. recipe directions a 3 or so....but flavor wins, so I rate a delicious 4 stars!!! thanks again!

I just made this meat pie yesterday using this recipe and it was awesome. My son is studying Australia in his class and I brought some for the teachers and they all loved it. I used a muffin tin to make mini meat pies instead one big pie. This recipe is definitely a winner!! Elke Thank You.

A very good meat pie! My mother and sister loved it. My sister loved it so much, she said it didn't even need ketchup. I didn't use pastry sheets, I only had frozen pie crusts on hand so I used those. The recipe is simple to follow and easy to make except for crying from chopping the onion. It was flavorful with a great texture, thanks for sharing.

This was a very tasty recipe. We had to improvize on the puff pastry sheet, though, but it still worked out splendidly!

you little ripper! This was a great meat pie, flavourful and just the right level of moisture. I added some frozen peas to the beef in the last 5 minutes of simmering, to make sure some veg got in there somewhere! It was so tasty, side dishes weren't going to cut it.

Wonderful recipe. I used Classic Pie Crust, Idiot Proof Step-By-Step Photo Tutorial to make the pastry and have included detailed step by step photos for the entire process of making this pie. The result is a very tasty pie and one that is really easy to put together. Apart from using my own pastry, the only other change I made was to substitute the bouillon cubes and water with homemade beef stock that contains no salt as I'm trying to eat healthier. Please see my rating system: my DH, who can be considered a "non pie eater" not only gave this the thumbs up but also requested that we have it again. For a Kiwi missing her downdunder meat pies, that simple statment earned this recipe 5 stars in a instant. Thanks!

This was very nice, especially with lashings of ketchup over the top. I covered the pie with foil after the first 15 minutes as another reviewer suggested. I also added some diced fresh mushrooms and a clove of crushed garlic. Next time I will try half red wine and half water. Thanx for posting!

Well, I'm sorry if I bring the 5-star rating down a bit because everyone else loves this pie, but I thought it was good, but not more. I had two problems with the result. Firstly, it turned out very sweet, but I blame a sweet tomato sauce and less-salty-than-usual stock rather than the recipe. Secondly, I didn't like the flour because it gave a floury taste and gluggy consistency. I would have liked a gravy made with cornflour and the bullion, in the pan used to cook the beef. I followed the recipe exactly, and I think the worcestershire sauce, oregano and nutmeg are great ideas.

Elke this recipe is terrific! Apart from the addition of just a little bit of ground coriander I made it just as you've written it and it turned out scrumptiously! Thanks for the recipe. I'm sure this will be a regular at our house:)

Yummy! I was out of oregano and omitted the nutmeg, but added about a half teaspoon of ground coriander and mmmmmmmm! Thank you for sharing such a simple and yummy meal idea! Hubby loved it and told me to "put it in the rotation" so kudos to you, elke! Thanks for sharing.

Great comkfort food for my kiwi hubby! SO easy. Never worked with puff pastry before and did not know to defrost for 40 mins. also forgot to grease pie pan but it came out ok. This would have been easier following those! Tasted good enough hubby ate 1/2 pie and my son & his girlfriend polished off the rest!!! Thanks for the post and I'll submit photos! Will make again with my own corrections!

As an Aussie I feel quite qualified to say that this is an awesome meat pie! So simple and easy to make and very, very yummy! I left out the nutmeg but otherwise follwed the recipe exactly. I served this with homemade chips and a salad and of course lots of tomato sauce (that's ketchup for the uninitiated!) Thanks for a great recipe elke!

This would have to be the best homemade meatpie I have ever tasted. My fiance keeps asking me when we are having it again so it is definitely a keeper! Thanks.
