Many recipes call for a 40 gram (1.4oz) packet of French onion soup mix or dry onion soup mix. This makes a great replacement. Can be made gluten-free with the addition of gluten-free stock powder or a gluten-free bouillon cube and gf cornflour (AUssies White Wings brand is suitable).
- 2 tablespoons potato starch (also labelled as potato flour in Australia) or 2 tablespoons cornflour (US-cornstarch)
- 1⁄8 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
- 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 teaspoon vegetable stock powder or 1 bouillon cube
- 1 teaspoon dried onion
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Mix all of the ingredients together and use as required. The above amount replaces one 40 gram packet of soup mix (1.4 oz packet).
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this recipe. I've loved French Onion Soup Mix as a meal-base or dip-base forever, but couldn't think of an alternative gluten-free alternative. You are clever!
Another wonderful replacement for a store bought mix. We use this all the time. Made for Aus/NZ swap.
This recipe saved the day. I wanted to make Cheesy Onion Potatoes but I had no onion soup mix. I was lucky to find this and loved it. It was so easy to make and I even like the flavor better than the packaged stuff. I am sure it is much healthier too. Thanks for sharing **Jubes**!
