Matchsticks

"The original Aussie Matchstick was filled with fresh whipped cream, and though it tasted great, it was very messy and very rich! This recipe is just the basic matchstick, dessert size; but you can make them smaller for kids or as a flash morning tea item. They go very well at kid's parties, try a chocolate pudding and grated chocolate for the filling, or use Nutela instead of jam. Both the filling and the pastry can be prepared 2 days ahead, but dont put them together until your ready to eat them!"

  1. So good and so easy to make. It could be a dangerous combination. The pastry was wonderful. Crisp, flaky pastry, delicious, thick, creamy filling, sweet strawberry jam, be still my heart. A lovely light, decadent dessert. Thank you so much for posting. You are a hero at my house. :)

  2. I rather stupidly scaled down this recipe a bit and then regretted it when I saw how fast these little beauties disappeared. They were simple to make and the cream was delicious although I did add a little icing sugar and some vanilla essence to it. I made the matchsticks quite small (around 5cm x 3cm) and served them to some children who really enjoyed them. The only problem I had was that I used cheap puff pastry which was very thin and so I had to use one piece on the bottom and one on the top rather than cutting one piece in half. Other than that, it's a great recipe and one that would be popular at kid's parties. Made for AUS/NZ Recipe Swap #50.

  3. Thanks mummamills for such a simple and yummy dessert. I remember having these as a child and my daughters and husband loved them. Served dusted with icing sugar. I've used this same filling in profiteroles before...but who would bother making profiteroles when this recipe is so easy! I did try making some on frozen gluten-free pastry.....but they just didn't turn out as the pastry didn't puff enough to cut in half....so just added the filling as a topping :yummy: Photo posted...though I will try and get a better photo later on
